With their shaggy hair and bell-bottoms, they represented the countercultural tide more than most of the Harlem Cultural Festival performers. The funk band had their first hits the year prior and were among the exceptionally rare integrated bands in America. It’s what Questlove calls “a slight moment of audience indifference,” born of a generation gap. One crowd moment that didn’t make the cut came when Sly and the Family Stone performed. So I really wanted to milk that for all it’s worth.” What You Didn’t See From Sly and the Family Stone “We were all so fascinated by the crowd.” Adds Questlove, “It’s rare for me to see people who look like me from the era that I was born. The first draft of the film ran over three hours, with the first five minutes dedicated to “just crowd shots,” Pearson says. “In an embarrassment of riches and an embarrassment of electric performances, to me probably the most compelling part of the film was just people-watching,” Questlove says. The 5th Dimension sequence is one of many moments in which the focus is almost as much on the performers as it is on the crowd.
